BioVersys Announces First Subjects Dosed in Phase 1 Clinical Trial of BV100

BV100 is being developed for the treatment of serious hospital infections caused by Carbapenem resistant Acinetobacter baumannii
BASEL, Switzerland I November 18, 2020 I BioVersys has reached a major milestone by entering clinical development with the start of Phase 1 testing of BV100 in healthy volunteers. BioVersys AG, a privately owned, multi-asset Swiss pharmaceutical company focused on developing small molecules for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections with applications in Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) and targeted microbiome modulation, today announced that the first healthy volunteers have received BV100 in a Phase 1 clinical trial designed to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of BV100 in healthy human volunteers through Single Ascending Dose (SAD) and Multiple Ascending Dose (MAD) studies.
• BV100 is a potential breakthrough hospital antibiotic to treat serious infections caused by Carbapenem Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) in indications of ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP), hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP) and bloodstream infections (BSI), for which there are little to no effective and safe treatment options. BioVersys has developed a proprietary human IV formulation of BV100 for the CRAB hospital market and elucidated the unique mode of action that accounts for its tremendous potency and coverage of clinical CRAB isolates.
• BV100 has completed GLP toxicology studies and has shown outstanding in vitro and in vivo efficacy in several animal models, with unprecedented in vitro strain coverage against CRAB and a very low propensity to develop resistance. It was granted QIDP Designation by the U.S. FDA in May 2019 for use in the treatment of VABP, HABP and BSI, making BV100 eligible for priority FDA review, Fast Track designation, and a five-year extension of market exclusivity upon approval of the first QIDP indication.

BioVersys is developing a potential breakthrough hospital antibiotic, BV100, for Carbapenem Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) hospital infections, where our data shows BV100 to be superior compared to standard of care antibiotics tested. BV100 has shown in several animal studies potent in vivo activity showing a reduction of bacterial lung burden by ≥3 log10 CFU. BioVersys has elucidated the new mode of action of BV100 and developed a novel IV formulation, which has been successfully tested in GLP toxicology studies. The potent activity of BV100 against CRAB, the novel formulation, novel mode of action and the potential for an abbreviated path to approval represents a very attractive opportunity to develop this urgently needed medicine for patients in need.
About Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
In Europe, ~4 million hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) occur annually and antibiotic resistance is responsible for an estimated 33,000 deaths/year, with EUR 1.5 billion in healthcare costs and productivity losses/year. Worldwide >700’000 lives are estimated to be lost annually, and this is predicted to rise to 10 million by 2050. Hospital acquired infections affect patients undergoing surgeries, or treatments for cancer, or viral infections, such as the current corona virus pandemic. The most notorious resistant bacteria and top of the World Health Organization’s list of Priority 1 pathogens is Acinetobacter baumannii. Carbapenem antibiotics are standard of care but Carbapenem Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infections are widespread, with mortality rates ≥ 50%. No currently approved drug is seen to adequately treat these difficult infections and there are very few drugs in clinical development.
